A voluntary quiz of licensed Washington State notaries between May 12th and August 19th, 2026, reveals that

Only 49% of notaries can identify the three most common types of notarial acts.

That number is more than a statistic – it is a warning sign.

If over half of the notaries cannot even identify the type of notarial act that means they:

• Are not following the legally required steps for each specific act,
• Are not properly recording the notarial act,
• Could have their notarizations invalidated leading to civil, criminal, and administrative penalties,
• Opening themselves to unlimited personal liability.

Every notarial act has specific actions which must be followed. Without training, notaries are guessing — and guessing leads to incorrect, incomplete, invalid, and rejected notarizations which can harm not only your client but yourself and your employer.

Your state‑required notary bond protects the public, not you. If an error occurs, the injured party is paid from your bond — and then reimbursement to the bonding company comes directly from the you notary.
